My name is Mikael, and I also go by my Igbo nickname "Chuks". I'm a black (Igbo & Swedish) guy from America, and I taught English to elementary school kids in rural Taiwan for a year (2012-13). That was the year during which I ”awakened” to the larger geopolitical and social justice issues which shape our world and societies, and during that time I started blogging as BlackinAsia. I have since returned to the US "starting over" in many ways, as I reevaluate my life and various social issues through a newly critical perspective.
Overall, I use this space to discuss issues of social justice and to critically reflect on and review media and popular culture. This is also a space for my personal growth and learning, as I take in and observe the world and come to own my truth in turn.
Social inequalities are constructed and made and are not accidental.
